The honest truth: Dental implant surgery is a minor oral surgical procedure, and recovery is far more comfortable than most patients expect. The majority of our Northern Virginia patients return to work within 2–3 days and resume normal eating within 2–4 weeks. The key is following your post-op instructions carefully during the critical first week.
Following these guidelines is the single biggest factor in how quickly and successfully you heal.
Most patients feel normal within 1–2 weeks. Full osseointegration (the implant fusing with your jawbone) takes 3–6 months, but this happens below the surface with no discomfort. You can resume most normal activities within a few days.
The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia, so you feel no pain during surgery. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild — most patients manage it with over-the-counter ibuprofen. Many patients are surprised by how little discomfort they experience.
Soft foods for the first 1–2 weeks, then a gradual return to normal eating. Most patients are eating normally by weeks 3–4. We recommend avoiding very hard or crunchy foods near the implant site until the final crown is placed.
Contact our office immediately if you experience: severe or worsening pain after day 3, significant swelling that increases after day 2, fever, unusual discharge or bad taste, or if the implant feels loose. These are rare but require prompt attention.
Gentle brushing around the site starting day 2, warm saltwater rinses 3–4 times daily, and avoiding the implant site with hard foods. Dr. Matri will provide specific written instructions tailored to your procedure.
